BEHIND THE BRAND

The original heavy horsewear brand, heavy horse rugs designed by heavy horse owners.

The Big Horse Shop is a small family run business comprising of a dynamic mother-daughter-duo with the Founding Director, Jo and Designer, Gemma.

Founded in 2009, with a clear mission to create an equestrian brand designed specifically for the heavy horses & ponies the other brands and manufacturers forgot about. Epic Equestrian is the world’s leading heavy horsewear brand, designed specifically for heavy horses & ponies to accommodate the broader chest, shoulders, apple-bottom and feather. All products are designed in-house using our own unique size charts with quality, comfort, and functionality at the forefront.

After being asked by our wonderful heavy horse customers, we expanded Epic Equestrian and created a horse rug range designed specifically for light - medium weight horses & ponies with a regular chest and neck. The range features the same rug depth, extra-large shoulder gusset and super-sized tail flap as our heavy horse rugs.

With inclusivity at our forefront, we noticed a gap in the market for size inclusive equestrian riding clothing for the modern equestrian. Once again, we expanded Epic Equestrian and created Epic Rider, a range of advanced high performance ladies equestrian riding clothing designed in-house using our own unique size charts with style, comfort, functionality, and size inclusivity at the forefront.

THE JOURNEY

Founding Director Jo has always loved horses in particular the heavies. Through the ownership of her own heavy horses Inca – a Traditional Gypsy Cob, and Sam – a Shire X, she discovered a gap in the market for correctly fitting horsewear.

Both horses had a big chest and neck; short coupled with a very big apple bottom! Like other heavy horse owners, she struggled to find rugs to fit them correctly, they were always too tight around the chest and neck; then due to sizing up they were too long in the body.

“After 8 years of making do with what was available and 2 Years of should I, shouldn't I. Finally, I decided yes, I should.” 

The Big Horse Shop Ltd, launched in 2009 with the first rugs becoming available in 2010.

Here at The Big Horse Shop, we not only care about creating high quality products for our customers, but we also care about the people behind the creating! 

Before choosing a manufacturer, it is important for us to go and visit the factories to see the working conditions; making sure all staff members work reasonable hours, have a safe working environment as well earning a living wage! 

We believe everybody is important, from our customers to our manufacturers.
